Wonderful and highly unusual mid century Murano glass “Le Portatrici” couple sculptures, potentially attributed to Alfredo Barbini. Translating loosely to “the carriers,” these figurative Murano sculptures traditionally depicted Venetian court figures, clowns, dancers, and aristocratic characters carrying decorative vessels or baskets.

This particular pair feels especially rare due to the vibrant fruit bearing compositions and extraordinary coloration. The luminous teal green and fuchsia pink glass gives the figures a more modern and playful spirit than many traditional examples from the period, while still retaining the theatricality and craftsmanship of classic Murano figural sculpture.

Hand blown in Murano during the 1940s, the pair beautifully captures the whimsy, glamour, and artistry that made Venetian glass production so influential throughout the twentieth century. Equally compelling displayed on a console, étagère, or dining table, they function as both sculptural objects and conversation pieces with unmistakable Italian character.
